In the May 2020 Snapshot Survey, contractors share their strategies for adapting to working remotely to help you incorporate best practices into your plans. Here’s one survey question and its results from the summary report, which will be available in its entirety to EGIA members on 6/19/20.

How are you communicating with your employees that are working remotely? (Select all that apply)

In today’s world, it is becoming increasingly more common for business owners to transition some or all of their workforce to a remote work setting. Communicating effectively with a remote team can be challenging but there are a wide range of tools that leadership can utilize to make a transition to an office-less culture less daunting.

According to contractors who took our survey, 85% of remote teams communicate through emails/text messages and phone calls. 58% reported communicating through video conferencing and 27% said they use slack or other messaging apps to reach their team. If owners and managers find it difficult to communicate, they should consider moving to more visual, collaborative means of communication, as a lot of the nuance of face-to-face conversations can be lost through email.

Here’s what a contractor from Alberta, Canada had to say:

“This time has given us the ability to see that there are other ways to do things and that those other ways can be more efficient, if implemented correctly. Zoom meetings have almost allowed more engagement from our guys than when we are in the same room. The other tool that has come out of this is using the tool Trello, for project management. Been amazing for our office staff to know when things are getting done, without having to track people down and ask them. It also helps us to get things out of our heads and delegate with accountability!”
